"They paid for it in the first place and they’ve been supporting it ever since," book sale organiser Alison Cunningham said yesterday. A total of $63,742 had been raised to support the theatre during the latest "extremely successful" 24-hour sale itself, which ended at noon on Saturday.
Other continuing sale activities would add to the total raised, including the further sale of items which had been part of the memorabilia of late veteran Dunedin sports broadcaster Peter Sellers.
The total raised at the 37th annual sale was similar to last year’s, but the first 12 hours of the sale was busier, and the usual strong demand continued for New Zealand non-fiction books.
The annual event had established itself as a "very happy night out" for a lot of people, and it offered an enjoyable experience for people of all backgrounds and incomes.
A higher proportion of the books made available at the theatre had sold during the latest event, compared with last year.
About 100 volunteers had helped out with various aspects of the overall "fantastic" event, she said.
