New appointment rules and restrictions on visiting some particularly vulnerable patients at Dunedin Hospital have been introduced as part of the Otago District Health Board's swine flu management.

The board announced yesterday people wanting to visit patients in wards 8C (cancer), 7A (respiratory), the children's ward and the Queen Mary Maternity Centre must report to the patient inquiries desk in the main hospital foyer.

Only arranged visits to those wards will be allowed, the same restrictions which have always applied in the intensive care unit and neo-natal intensive care unit.

Incident controller Leanne Samuel said the extra restrictions had been prompted by the knowledge increasing numbers of people had flu-like symptoms.

"We're focusing on our most at-risk areas by having arranged visiting, which should reduce the traffic and get people thinking before they pop in to visit."

She was not aware of instances of people visiting when they had flu-like or other illness symptoms.

People attending hospital appointments are also being asked to phone before their appointment if they had flu-like symptoms within three days of their scheduled date. By doing this, they would be able to find out whether it was appropriate for them to attend, Ms Samuel said.

Information about how many people might be in Dunedin Hospital with flu-like symptoms was not available yesterday.

Nationally, the Ministry of Health is not giving daily reports of hospital numbers, but it is planning to on Tuesdays give a national snapshot of how the virus is impacting on health services.

Because few people are being tested, accurate swine flu figures are not available
