Robber hits Green Island Post Shop

Police are hunting a suspect after the Green Island Post Shop and Kiwibank was held up this morning.

Detective Sergeant Rob Hanna said a man passed a note demanding money to a teller shortly after 11am. The teller handed over a sum of cash and the man left the shop.

From video footage from the store, police described the man, who is still at large, as a male caucasian, about 170cm to 180cm tall, of slim build. He was wearing a dark hoodie, dark sunglasses and jeans.

It was unclear if the man had a weapon with him, or if he threatened to use one, Det Sgt Hanna said.

The Post Shop, which also operates as a Kiwibank outlet, is closed and the immediate area cordoned off as police continue to examine the scene.

There were a large number of people in the Postshop and attached coffee shop at the time, although most had not been aware of the robbery as it took place, he said

Customers in the coffee shop told the Otago Daily Times they had not noticed the incident, but had been told by others in the shop that the man had handed over a note that said he had a gun and to hand over cash.

Det Sgt Hanna said the description of the man in today's incident was similar to that given from a robbery at a service station in Mornington on Sunday, but it was not yet known if the two were linked.
