Scooter steal not real

The case of a stolen mobility scooter in St Kilda has been solved.

Senior Sergeant Ben Butterfield said after speaking to the victim it was established the scooter was never taken, and it was only its cover which was stolen.

The misinformation arose due to a recording error by officers, he said.

The story of a mobility scooter stolen from a victim, aged in their 70s, had sparked outrage online.

Snr Sgt Butterfield thanked the public for its response to the initial report.

"The response to the reported theft from the community has been excellent with several members of the public reporting possible sightings and even the offer of a loan scooter from a member of the public," he said.

"It's really pleasing to get reminded just how much the community cares about each other."
