One health professional employed by the Southern District Health Board was paid between $820,000 and $830,000 last financial year, the board's annual report shows.

The unidentified clinician was one of two people who received more than the $510,000 to $520,000 of chief executive Brian Rousseau, who has now left to work in Adelaide.

(Mr Rousseau's salary package has been given as a lower amount than this, but how much is paid out in any one year depends on the timing of payments.)

The other person was in the $580,000 to $590,000 salary band.

The highest salary immediately below Mr Rousseau's was $460,000 to $470,000.

The report does not say whether that was a clinician.

The chief executive's band is the only one linked to a specific job.

Among the 412 employees paid more than $100,000 a year, 86 were administrative staff, while the remaining 326 were medical or dental employees.

The board has a total staff of 4500.

The annual report stated that if the remuneration paid to part-time employees were upgraded to a full-time position, the total number of staff with full-time equivalent salaries more than $100,000 would rise to 635.

Comparisons with last financial year are difficult because the new Southern board had been in existence for only two months by the end of June 2010 and figures for the old Otago and Southland boards do not cover a full year.

The largest number of staff receiving more than $100,000 was 69 in the $100,000 to $110,000 bracket, followed by 44 in the next bracket, $110,000 to $120,000, and 42 in the $120,000 to $130,000 range.

In the $200,000 and above bands, the highest number of people in any one band was 19, receiving $230,000 to $240,000.

Nine people received $300,000 to $310,000 among 31 people with remuneration between $300,000 and $370,000.

The annual report says 17 people received payments for termination or personal grievances totalling $359,173, compared with 15 in the previous year for Otago and Southland and the Southern boards totalling $151,248.

The payouts last year ranged from less than $1000 to about $69,000.

A total of $402,000 was spent on remuneration for board members during the financial year.

This figure does not include payment to crown monitor Stuart McLauchlan.

The highest remuneration went to deputy chairman Paul Menzies, who received $38,000, followed by chairman Joe Butterfield, who took office in December and had therefore served only half of the financial year.

The smallest remuneration, $10,000, was received by board members Karen Goffe, Judith Medlicott, Katie O'Connor and Louise Rosson, who all retired at the end of last year.
