Snow Queen rehearsals skate along

Rehearsals were under way at Dunedin Ice Stadium on Tuesday evening for the Dunedin Ice Skating Club’s annual ice extravaganza.

This year, the skaters were pulling out all the stops — not to mention pirouettes and leaps — to bring to life the story of the Snow Queen.

Director Megan Kliegl said the seven principal roles were supported by a cast of 45 skaters, whose ages ranged from 6 to 74 years old.

Making her eighth directorial appearance this year, Ms Kliegl said it was incredible to see it come together on the ice.

She said 2021 had been another "really tough year" after Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 Christmas show, which had been an annual event for a decade.

"This year became much more of an emotional thing for us. After the show was cancelled, everyone was training for nationals, which also then got cancelled."

Regardless, after the dress rehearsal on Tuesday night, the skaters were excited for the shows to begin.

"People will love this show. It’s a wonderful way to end the year," Ms Kliegl said.

The show runs from tomorrow to Sunday at the Dunedin Ice Stadium in St Kilda from 5pm.
