Stadium to host Phoenix warm-up

The Wellington Phoenix will host defending champion Brisbane Roar in a pre-season A-League football game at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in mid-August.

Dunedin Venues Management Ltd chief executive David Davies declined to comment and Phoenix chief executive Nathan Greenham could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The stadium is also thought to be in the running to host the A-League game between the Phoenix and the Roar on December 14. That game is a regionally-allocated fixture with neither side owning the home rights.

Rugby union will get first use of the stadium when Meads Cup champion North Otago plays West Coast in the Heartland competition match on August 7.

Otago's first game at the stadium will be against Manawatu on August 17. The venue is hosting four Rugby World Cup games in September and October.

Sir Elton John will perform at the stadium on November 25.
