Stereo confiscated after party on Dunedin traffic island

A noisy early-morning party on an inner-city traffic island prompted police to lock up four Dunedin people for breaching the peace yesterday.

Noise control officers confiscated a stereo following repeat callouts to a Smith St address, with police called "after the festivities continued", Acting Senior Sergeant Chris George said.

Police arrived to find the partygoers occupying a traffic island on the corner of York Pl and Smith St, shortly after 10am.

The four, aged in their 20s, were taken to Dunedin Central Police Station for breaching the peace and were later released without charge.

Police are also appealing for information following an early-morning joyride yesterday.

Sgt George said a burnt-out Nissan Pulsar was discovered at 6.45am next to the Otago Golf Club's Balmacewen course.

The car was believed to have been involved in "wilful damage type offences" around the Maori Hill area.

The car was stolen from a North Dunedin address, and police were keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed anyone acting suspiciously in the Maori Hill area.
