Time running out to enrol

People who want to make sure they are sent voting papers promptly for the citizens-initiated referendum next month have less than a week to ensure they are on the main electoral roll.

July 10 is the last day for voters to be included on the main roll and ensure they are part of the main mail-out of papers from July 31 to August 3.

The last day for enrolment is July 30, but voters enrolling between July 10 and 30 will not receive their papers until the second mail-out on August 4.

The registrar of electors for Dunedin North and Dunedin South electorates, Dee Vickers, said Dunedin North enrolments were at 82.16% of the expected eligible voters compared to Dunedin South (97.91%).

Enrolments had been coming in to her office in dribs and drabs but yesterday there had been a "huge mailbag" which was a good sign more people were getting the enrolment message.

She reminded people who were already enrolled that to receive the postal voting papers they would need to have their correct address recorded.

Voting on the referendum question "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand?" will close on August 21.
