The 69-year-old Mosgiel resident worked her last day at the Taieri Court Rest Home last week, having been employed at the facility since its opening 35 years ago.
Mrs Crawford said health issues had prompted her to take a break from the part-time job she loved.
''It's time to sit back and smell the roses, as they keep telling me,'' she said.
Caring was a rewarding occupation, but could also be stressful, she said.
''You become attached to the residents so much, and of course they're all moving on.
''I think in a way that takes a toll on you at times.''
Mrs Crawford had a farewell party at the rest home last week, and found it funny to be finishing up on April Fool's Day.
She planned to enjoy having more free time in retirement.
