Limousines, flowers and blue movies should be strictly off limits when Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin and two councillors visit Japan next month.
Mr Chin and Crs Bill Acklin and Andrew Noone were yesterday selected to represent the council in a delegation to visit Otaru, Japan, from July 23 to 25.
The trip marked the 30th anniversary of the signing of the cities' sister city agreement.
Cr Neil Collins voted in favour of the trio's selection at yesterday's council economic development committee meeting, but he made it clear he expected no repeat of embarrassing lapses like those of Labour MPs Shane Jones, Chris Carter and others.
"No limousine, no flowers and no blue movies," he instructed.
Jokes aside, Cr Collins said he supported the trip and believed the council had been "pretty frugal" in money spent on overseas sister city trips.
Mr Chin last visited Otaru in 2006.
Otaru Mayor Katsumaro Yamada would lead a much larger reciprocal delegation to Dunedin in mid-October.
The three men would be accompanied to Otaru by two council staff members.
Funding for the trip would come from the council's $50,000 annual sister cities budget, of which $17,215 remained for this financial year, staff said.
Costs were not yet known, but many were often met by host cities.
