The largest gathering of veteran, vintage and classic cars in Otago is being planned for 2016.
The International Vintage Motoring Festival is expected to attract up to 1000 vehicles to Dunedin from around New Zealand and overseas.
"It will be the biggest vintage car rally in Dunedin yet," director Nicola Wilkinson said yesterday.
The tentative date for the festival is January 15 to 24, 2016, Mrs Wilkinson said.
"We're looking at between 800 and 1000 cars.
"It will be a real mixture of old veteran classics and more modern vehicles, up to 1985.
"The cars have to be 30 years or older to be eligible. There has already been quite a lot of international interest."
It would be a good event for the city, she said.
"It will be good for accommodation places, too.
"We might have to look at putting people into hostels and university residences, as they will be empty at that time of year."
The festival hoped to base the rally headquarters at the Lion Foundation Arena, she said.
"Tours will be arranged around the city for the older cars and to outlying areas for the faster cars and we're hoping to finish the festival by joining in with the Dunedin to Brighton rally."
