Police are seeking information to help find the people responsible for a spate of vandalism after a trail of damage was left across four Dunedin suburbs early on Saturday morning.
At least 40 letterboxes, solar lights and five car windows were damaged in what police believe were possibly connected instances of wilful destruction in the Fairfield, Mosgiel, Waverley and Vauxhall areas.
Fairfield resident Don Ebsworth said about 40% of letterboxes in his street had been damaged.
"It's disturbing that people basically have no respect for other people's property," Mr Ebsworth said.
Senior Constable Aaron Smith, of South Dunedin, said it appeared the letterboxes had been kicked or wrenched off their posts, between midnight and 3am.
Similar letterbox damage had occurred in November.
It was believed the offenders were in a vehicle as some residents heard a vehicle soon after the bang of their letterbox being attacked, he said.
Also on Saturday, at least five smashed car windows were reported in vehicles parked around South Dunedin.
There was quite possibly a link between the South Dunedin vandalism and the similar incidents in the Mosgiel area, he said.
Constable Jason Braid, of Mosgiel, said reports indicated similar damage occurred about 3.50am in Fairfield and about 4.10am in Mosgiel.
It appeared that the letterboxes had been kicked and the solar lights uprooted and then thrown from a vehicle.
Reports indicated there might have been three offenders, travelling in a station wagon, he said.
Snr Const Smith urged people to ring police immediately if they noticed vandalism.
Anyone with any information on Saturday's incidents should also call police, he said.
