Otago Harbour was far from ideal as a playground on Sunday afternoon — with an Antarctic wind sailing up the harbour and waves flying around. But what was believed to be a Southern right whale had what looked like some quality play time. The whale was spotted near the Aramoana beach in a rugged sea. Photo: Brendon Shanks Dunedin man Brendon Shanks was nearby on the peninsula side of the harbour and managed to catch the spectacular sight of the whale. He said the whale was jumping around for about 30 minutes and, for about five of those 30 minutes, did some breaching, jumping up and around, which made for an amazing sight. He had been going down to the family crib at Te Rauone beach for years and had never seen a sight like it, he said. During the breeding season in winter and spring, Southern right whales are mostly found in the waters around the subantarctic Auckland and Campbell Islands, but there are occasional sightings around mainland New Zealand.
