A 17-year-old man has been arrested on firearms charges after a gunshot was heard in Tauranga last night.
Acting Senior Sergeant Cameron Anderson said numerous calls were received by police about an out-of-control party in Dunton Drive, Welcome Bay, 8km southeast of downtown Tauranga.
Mr Anderson said a person was seen on the street with a firearm and a shot was fired.
The area was cordoned off and police subsequently searched for a vehicle in which the gunman left the scene.
A vehicle was stopped shortly afterwards on State Highway 2 near Te Puke, 23km southeast of Tauranga, without incident a short time later.
Mr Anderson said a firearm was found in the car along with three occupants.
The 17-year-old from Te Puke will appear in Tauranga District Court. Two youths, aged 14 and 15, were referred to the Police Youth Aid section.
