Couple brutally beaten in park

Police are appealing for witnesses to the brutal attack on a young couple in a west Auckland park yesterday.

A 19-year-old man, with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain, was found in Starling Park, Ranui about 7am shortly before a 17-year-old woman with multiple facial injuries turned up at a nearby house seeking help.

Detective Sergeant Roger Small told The New Zealand Herald the couple was seriously beaten, although police were still unsure who was responsible or what -- if any -- motive was behind the attack.

Several neighbouring residents reported hearing noises coming from Starling Park but either did not see anything or did not investigate.

Mr Small appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
