Doc to get new depot

Makarora's Department of Conservation headquarters will have a new works depot built to replace a building gutted by fire in July.

Funding of about $150,000 has been secured to build a workshop, on the site of the former depot, and also buy new plant and equipment to replace that destroyed in the midwinter fire.

Doc Wanaka area manager Paul Hellebrekers said work on the the $120,000 building was expected to start in January.

Resource consent was needed before the building could go ahead, he said.

About $30,000 funding would be used to replace the "most important and needed" equipment and plant lost in the fire, he said.

The Makarora Doc outpost was a strategically important works depot as it was used as a maintenance base for the remote northern part of the Mount Aspiring National Park, Mr Hellebrekers said.

Doc staff at Makarora have used a garage, attached to a workers' accommodation building, and a shed which survived July's fire as an interim base.

"Everyone is really looking forward to the rebuild. It is expected to take between six and eight weeks once started," Mr Hellebrekers said.

The new workshop would be constructed on the concrete slab the former depot was built on and be "exactly the same shell design" as its predecessor, he said.
