Drink driving charges after street race crash

Three people will appear in court on drink driving charges after a street race crash in Napier early today.

The smash happened about 12.30am on Marine Parade towards Harding Road as three cars were racing, Senior Sergeant Fred van Duuren of Napier Police said.

"One car was in the process of overtaking another car and they were apparently doing between 120 and 140 kilometres an hour," Mr van Duuren said.

"The overtaking car crashed, no one's been injured, but that driver was subsequently breath tested and, amongst other things, is going to be charged with drink driving, as are the other two (drivers) that were involved as well."

Mr van Duuren said the cars had been impounded and the three had had their licenses suspended.

The three, aged 17, 18 and 22, would appear in Napier District Court on Wednesday.
