A former gang site has been searched as part of the police investigation into the murder of Christchurch prostitute Mellory Manning last year.

The beaten body of Ms Manning, 27, was found in the Avon River on December 19 .

She was last seen alive the previous night on a central city street where she worked as a prostitute.

Forensics teams yesterday examined storage sheds in Galbraith Avenue, Avonside, a few hundred metres away from where Ms Manning's body was found, The Press reported.

Inquiry head Detective Inspector Greg Williams said police had identified 130 "sections of interest" which they were working through.

Nothing of interest was found at the Galbraith Avenue site, he said.

Neighbours said the sheds had been used by "shady" characters, including members of the Mongrel Mob.

The sheds were now being used for storage, a local said.

Ms Manning's cellphone was last used on or just north of Bealey Avenue, about 3.5km east of the Galbraith Avenue site, at 10.43pm the night she was murdered.

She had been strangled, stabbed in the chest several times and beaten about the head and legs with what appeared to be a piece of reinforcing steel.

Mr Williams said her injuries were the worst he had seen in 29 years of police work.
