New Zealand's Indy Car champion Scott Dixon is a dad.

Dixon's wife, Emma, has given birth to Poppy Davies Dixon, who was born in Indianapolis, United States, during the week, the Herald on Sunday reported.

Poppy weighed in at 2.95kg (6lb 8oz) and took her parents by surprise by arriving about three weeks early.

"All are doing fine," Dixon said on his website.

His father, Ron Dixon, told the newspaper Poppy looked like her father.

"I'm not one to say how babies look but everyone says she looks more like Scott than Emma but she's a cute little thing." "You'd think he's been looking after a baby all his life.

"He's loving it, enjoying it. You can't get rid of the smile off his face, trust me."
