Granny jailed for selling drugs

A Whangarei grandmother who sold cannabis soon after being given home detention for drug dealing has been jailed for 26 months.

Te Neehi Tania Hill, 55, appeared in the High Court at Whangarei for sentence after earlier pleading guilty to charges of possessing cannabis for sale or supply and two of selling cannabis, The Northern Advocate reported.

She was also up for review of a sentence of home detention.

The court was told that in November last year, Hill was given 10 months' home detention after she was caught running a tinnie house in June.

Two weeks later police raided her home, and found 13 cannabis tinnies.

Justice Lynton Stevens said there was a need to hold Hill accountable for the harm done to the victims and the community, while also denouncing the conduct and to deter others.

The aggravating features of the case included that the first set of offences involved Hill having her granddaughter make sales of cannabis on her behalf.

Monyca Wirinia Aramoana-Hill, 17, was left to run the tinnie house when Hill was out.

She was sentenced to 300 hours' community work and 12 months' supervision.
