The death of a teenager missing after leaping into a lake on Auckland's North Shore yesterday was an accident waiting to happen, an upset local cays.
Police divers this morning resumed the search of a quarry swimming hole next to Lake Pupuke for the body of the 16-year-old.
He failed to surface after jumping 5m off a cliff top into the water yesterday afternoon.
The swimming hole is next to the North Shore Squash Club and president Pat Menzies said today he warned the new Auckland Council last week something had to be done about the dangers leaping into the lake posed for youngsters.
"It's been an accident waiting to happen. Everyday I go to the club, especially in summer, there are kids there.
"It is a beautiful spot down there and it attracts them. Where there is water there is going to be people and youths.
"I feel very bad. The kids were just having fun."
Mr Menzies said over the years there had been a number of deaths and injuries at the lake.
The name of the missing youth had not been released.
He was a student at the School of Business in Newmarket, Auckland, and had gone to the lake with other students and staff.
School owner Lyndon Cooper told the New Zealand Herald last night he was still waiting to speak to staff about what happened.
