Police are looking for help to identify a man who was killed when he was struck by a train in Mt Maunganui today.
The man was killed on a straight stretch of rail track near Maunganui Road about 12.40pm today.
No vehicles were involved and the incident was not at a level crossing.
Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross of Tauranga Police said early witness accounts suggest the man stepped in front of the train without looking.
He said the man was a male European in his 60s or 70s. His attire included a white-faced Seiko analogue watch and a cap.
Anyone who could help identify the dead man, or who witnessed the incident, is asked to call Tauranga Police.
Mr Glencross said the police victim support unit were helping the train driver and witnesses who police have contacted.
