Name suppression lifted for Chinese student

A Chinese student, charged with the murder of an Auckland woman, has had his name suppression lifted.

Peng Cheng Tian, 23, was granted interim name suppression when he appeared in Auckland District Court last week but after a brief appearance today the suppression order lapsed.

Tian, from the North Shore suburb of Hillcrest, was charged after Yi Ren, 30, was found stabbed in an Auckland inner city apartment last Tuesday.

Yi Ren, also known as Tina, was a Chinese national from Beijing.

Tian, whose arm is in a cast, made a brief appearance this morning when the partner and friends of the victim, Yi Ren, were present, The New Zealand Herald website reported.

A man yelled at Tian as he was led back into custody.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Breach said there were "emotions running" but the man made no threats.

"The judge handled it very well, she took a couple of moments and carried on with proceedings."

Ms Ren's family, who live in China, are believed to be on their way to New Zealand.

A post-mortem examination on Ms Ren was carried out on Friday and a preliminary report showed she had suffered stab wounds.
