Neil Young has cancelled plans to tour New Zealand and Australia next year.

The folk-music star was named as the headliner at Bluesfest in Byron Bay and was set to play a three-hour set on the Friday night of the five-day festival, with his latest backing group Promise of the Real.

Young and his backing band were also going to perform headline shows in indoor arenas and special outdoor shows in Australia and New Zealand while he was here, but Frontier Touring announced on Tuesday that these shows would not be going ahead.

"Frontier Touring regret to advise that Neil Young will unfortunately no longer be undertaking a 2017 headline tour of Australia and New Zealand as previously 'teased' on our social media," the company said in an emailed statement.

Despite this, Young is still named on the bill for Bluesfest in April, and organisers have declined to comment.
