Police have found two men suspected of shooting out the windscreen of a truck on a motorway north of Wellington this afternoon.
They also have found the weapon believed to have been used.
The incident happened about 3pm near Horokiwi, 4km west of Petone, Sergeant Bruce Mackay of central police communications said.
The truck was travelling along the motorway and was overtaken on the left lane by a white 1995 Toyota stationwagon with two male occupants.
The driver of the car was understood to have fired on the truck with a black item, described by witnesses as a handgun.
The driver was not injured during the incident.
Police found the vehicle and one of the men in the Horokiwi area where they had been last seen driving, Mr Mackay said.
The second man later handed himself in to Porirua police.
Inquiries continue and no charges have yet been laid, Mr Mackay said.
