Public responds to Crimestoppers

Crimestoppers New Zealand says its pleased with the public response during its first seven months of operation.

Crimestoppers is an independent international organisation dedicated to providing an anonymous means for people to give information on crime.

Crimestoppers has received 3786 calls with 1566 of them regarded as actionable. Actionable means there is enough information for the police to take some action.

The figures for May are slightly up with 248 of 598 calls regarded as actionable.

The spread of calls have been consistent with 75 percent from the North Island, of which 50 percent were from Auckland, and 25 percent from the South Island, of which 80 percent were from Christchurch.

Most people choose to phone up but about one in five emailed the information through using the online message form. Most of the information is about theft, wanted persons, traffic offences, illegal weapons and violent and sexual crime.

Chief executive Lou Gardiner said the consistent figures were very encouraging. "This is clearly a service that New Zealanders have taken to."

"Crime is right up there as a concern to the community and anything people can do, they will do to bring it down. The anonymity is the key. People can do something and not be in danger themselves," Mr Gardiner said.

Though rewards were sometimes offered to those with actionable information, Mr Gardiner said most people did not call up expecting a reward and simply wanted to help their community.
