Sex abuser bought victims cellphones

A 46-year-old man bought cellphones for boys he was sexually abusing so that he could contact them and organise meetings, a court was told today.

Truck driver Stanley Cowley, 46, pleaded guilty in Wellington District Court to 27 charges, including six of sexual violation and 15 counts of indecency involving three boys between 1999 and 2005.

His victims were aged between 10 and 16 at the time of offending.

Police said Cowley, who now lives in the Wellington suburb of Tawa, bought the boys gifts, took them for rides in the truck he used as a long-haul driver and even rented a hotel room with two of them a number of times.

The offending began in July 1999 with Cowley taking one of the boys for rides in trucks, stopping in secluded places to sexually abuse him. The abuse continued until June 2002.

Cowley later befriended two boys aged 13 and 14, taking them on holiday to Rotorua.

He bought them mobile phones so he could contact them and organise meetings, and also bought them alcohol and cannabis.

Police said the offending followed a similar pattern each time. He would begin with kisses and hugs before fondling the boys and occasionally performing oral sex on them.

In his defence, Cowley told police he knew it was wrong, but said while he was using the boys for his own gratification, they were also using him to get what they wanted.

He was remanded in custody for sentencing on April 17.
