Victims hit on unlit road: police

A young woman killed instantly when hit by a car in east Auckland last night was in the middle the road wearing dark clothing, police say.

The 19-year-old from Pukekohe was killed instantly, and a Manurewa woman in her early 20s badly injured, when hit on an unlit semi-rural road near Te Puru Park in suburban Beachlands at 11.10pm, the serious crash unit said.

Both had been in a car which parked beside the Whitford-Maraetai Rd, with the male driver remaining inside, Counties Manukau police said.

They had pulled over when an argument broke out, with one woman walking on to the road and sitting down. The other woman followed, and tried to persuade her to get off the road.

The driver of a car which rounded the corner saw the pair and braked, but was unable to avoid them.

He was badly shaken, but co-operating with police. He had not been drinking.

The injured woman was taken to Middlemore Hospital in critical condition.

The serious crash unit is investigating.

Blood tests were taken on both women.
