Wet week on way for many

Heavy rain is expected across the North Island and most of the South Island today.

Auckland, Coromandel, Great Barrier Island and Western Bay of Plenty are expected to bear the brunt of the rain, but the whole country could expect some showers.

MetService meteorologist Arno Dyason said the there was a heavy rain watch for the upper North Island today and rain was on the cards for most of the week.

"There's a low pressure just to the west of the North Island today, which gradually moves south so quite a widespread of rain all across the North Island and spreading south over the South Island."

While the rain eases off slightly tomorrow, most places were still in for showers tomorrow and for the rest of the week.

"The current weather we are getting now really sticks around for the next while," Dyason said.

The North Island could expect rain for most of the week, while lesser amounts were forecast for the South Island.
