A man has been arrested after a fight in downtown Auckland left a woman in a critical condition in hospital.
Police were called to a lunch bar on Pitt Street about 2.20pm after a fight was reported between two people.
A 45-year-old woman was taken to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries and underwent surgery.
She remained in a critical condition, Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley said.
Last night a 54-year-old man who knows the woman was arrested and charged with assault.
It was likely more serious charges would be laid, Mr Whitley said.
