The name of an Australian woman who died after suffering head injuries in a fall on to rocks has been released.
She was Ashleigh Jade Dargusch (23), of Queensland.
Police said Ms Dargusch was walking with four friends in the Kauaeranga Valley in the southern Coromandel Peninsula when she fell at least five metres from the track, landing on her head.
"Standing 5-7 metres above the hole on a ledge she was described as watching two friends jumping into the water when she appears to have lost her footing and fallen on to a large slate of rock below, suffering critical injuries," Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend said.
Initial reports stated Ms Dargusch fell on Boxing Day, but police today said the accident happened on December 27.
The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust chopper flew her to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.
She remained in the hospital's intensive care unit for several days but died on Saturday.
"At this point in time I would like to extend the New Zealand Police's sympathies to her family and friends for their loss," Mr Friend said.
