Coming from South Africa, Jocelyn Fellowes has always wanted to make the most of the opportunities on offer in New Zealand.

The 18-year-old St Kevin’s College head girl says it has also been one of the greatest challenges she has faced.

"It has built resilience and confidence which contributed to me accepting a leadership role during my final year at school."

Jocelyn has an inquiring mind. It is something her teachers have encouraged, and now her inquisitiveness has inspired her to pursue a career in the financial and accounting field, with her sights set on becoming a forensic accountant.

"I’ve always been interested to know why things are the way they are and how they work."

She was top of mathematics in 2017 and 2018, top of business studies in 2019 and 2020, she completed NCEA level 3 calculus last year with an excellence endorsement, and she is studying a 100-level accounting paper at the University of Otago this year.

Next year she plans to study for a bachelor of commerce (majoring in accounting) degree at Otago University.

Jocelyn’s passion for helping others has led her to volunteer for organisations, including the Waitaki District Library and Iona Home and Hospital.

She says working with elderly people was particularly rewarding and enlightening.

"It was one of my favourite volunteering experiences as both my grandparents live in South Africa and Covid-19 has meant that I have not seen them since 2019."

A highlight of her year has been completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award through to Gold Level, which she feels has strengthened her character.

She has been a member of the school’s 1st XI hockey team since 2019, she represented the school in swimming from 2018 until 2020, she competed in the New Zealand Division II Swimming Championships in 2018, she has been a qualified lifeguard at the Waitaki Aquatic Centre for the past three years, and this year she competed in the Aoraki Cross-Country Championships.

Jacob Klemick’s family has made a lot of sacrifices so he can have an education that will push him to his full potential.

"My parents thought sending me to boarding school would help me to become more responsible and independent.

"Dad’s over in Australia working on a gas plant and Mum picked up a full-time job to help pay for my boarding fees, so I’m making the most of the opportunities that are available to me here."

The 18-year-old is from Cromwell, but started boarding at St Kevin’s College, in Oamaru, midway through 2018.

Since then, he has immersed himself in the college’s sporting and cultural activities.

He has been a member of the St Kevin’s 1st XV rugby team for the past three years, the 1st XI cricket team for the past four years and the first V basketball team this year.

He has coached the St Joseph's under-10 rugby team, and won the St Kevin’s cross-country in 2019 and 2021.

Jacob says his sporting ability has expanded significantly since arriving at the school, which has led him to represent North Otago in cricket (2019-21) and under-16 rugby (2019).

He has also fully embraced the school’s cultural activities by performing in Ako Hui (2019) and being a member of the Chapel Choir in 2019 and 2020.

As his parents hoped, his life in the hostel helped him develop excellent leadership skills which get exercised in his roles as head boy and as sports council representative.

He credits his family for his achievements.

"Family is one thing that I hold very close to my heart, with my dad being my role model in sport and work ethic.

"My main goal when I leave school is to make my family proud.

"I know it wasn’t exactly easy sending me off to boarding school, especially the financial side with Mum picking up a full-time job, but I aim to make them as proud as possible."

Next year, he hopes to study surveying at the University of Otago.
