Police make two arrests

Wanaka police made two arrests yesterday, the first for an alleged bookshop theft and the second for a alleged ski-pass fraud.

A 50-year-old local man was arrested late yesterday morning and charged with theft after allegedly stealing a $40 book from Wanaka Paper Plus. He will appear in the Queenstown District Court on August 22.

About noon, police arrested a 26-year-old British woman tourist, at Treble Cone ski area, after she tried to use someone else's five-day lift pass.

She was released with a pre-charge warning for fraud and trespassed from all Queenstown Lakes district skifields for two years, under an agreement put in place this year.

"I think it's important that people get their head around it ... the [skifield] tickets are just not transferable," Detective Dave Evans said.

"The skifields are on to it.

"This is a big cost to them and it's a competitive industry."
