A plea from two St Joseph's School pupils for covered bus shelters to keep pupils dry could be remedied by relocating ''underutilised'' shelters.

The school's year 8 school leaders, Francesca O'Malley and Poppy Lake, made a submission to the Queenstown Lakes District Council's draft annual plan and also spoke at the submission hearing held at the end of May.

They asked for two shelters, which are worth $12,000 each, be installed on Hallenstein St outside the school.

The annual plan was adopted at the council's June 25 meeting. As a result of ''external submissions'', $10,000 for Wakatipu bus shelters was included in the plan. The council's transport policy and stakeholder manager, Denis Mander, said it

was proposed two shelters be taken from Gorge Rd near Industrial Pl and another from Peninsula Rd, then relocated, two to to Hallenstein St and one outside the Pounamu Apartments in Frankton Rd.

Mr Mander said it would cost about $3000 to relocate each underutilised shelter and also lay a concrete pad.

However, the proposal is not yet set in stone.

Mr Mander stressed the district council would be consulting with adjoining tenants and property owners before any work was done and the relocations would depend on the outcome.

Consultation would likely take place later this month or early August, Mr Mander said.
