Wanaka Primary School will benefit from a "take a ride'' offer made by the owner of one of New Zealand's 35 Tesla Model S electric cars.
The car will be at the Warbirds and Wheels Museum at Wanaka Airport on Sunday, May 1, between 10am and noon.
Members of the public will be able to have a five-minute ride for a $20 donation to the school's sustainability project, which aims to make the school's grounds more activity-based.
The Tesla's owner, Richard Macdonald, is an advocate of sustainable water use and zero-emission cars and is driving his Tesla around the South Island to raise awareness of energy-efficient motoring.
He is providing the car and donating the electricity and his time.
Wanaka Primary School teacher Jennie Lyall said the opportunity to be involved with the Tesla was "hugely exciting and a great privilege''.
The donations would help pay for the creation of environmentally friendly "playscapes'' for the children.
"We're aiming to make play areas that recognise our surroundings - the native species from around Wanaka and the use of bush areas as a play area for the children.''
The Tesla Model S, which can accelerate from 0kmh to 100kmh in 3.2sec, costs about $130,000 and has won numerous awards.
Warbirds and Wheels managing director Robert Duncan said the museum celebrated the cars of yesteryear with pride, "but it's extremely exciting to be a part of the Tesla ride morning and see what the future of car-manufacturing looks like''.
"The likes of our Packards and Duesenberg certainly could guzzle some gas in their day, so the contrast between these two cars is phenomenal.
"We're going to display one of them side-by-side with the Tesla so people can appreciate the beauty of both these feats of engineering.''
