The fruits of three months' labour by inquiring young Mackenzie minds will go on display when the Mackenzie Schools Science Fair opens in Fairlie on Tuesday.

The two-day fair will feature more than 50 exhibits by classes, small groups, and individual pupils from Fairlie Primary School, Albury School, St Joseph's School Fairlie, Cannington School, Lake Tekapo School, Twizel Area School, Mackenzie Kindergarten and Mackenzie College.

Following judging of the exhibits at the Mackenzie Community Theatre on Tuesday, the venue will be opened to the public at 7pm and Wednesday from 9am to 2pm.

Fairlie Primary School teacher and organising committee chairwoman Andrea Fryer said the fair aimed to ‘‘keep science alive'' in primary schools so that when children went on to secondary school, they would be motivated to study science subjects.

‘‘Science is in everything we do. It seeks to ask why and how and teaches the children what steps they must take to find out the answers,'' Ms Fryer said.

‘‘It's really fun and hands-on, and the junior children love the opportunity it gives to do things independently.''

The winning exhibit by a Mackenzie College pupil will be entered in the Central South Island Science & Technology Fair, which will be held in Timaru on September 17.
