Firefighters attended a chimney fire at the Alexandra Heights Motel at lunchtime today resulting in the main highway being reduced to one lane.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said firefighters were called to the scene along Centennial Ave at 12.31pm.

Officer in charge Brendon Walker said there was a diesel fire in the motel which burned up a chimney.

The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived.

"We isolated the fuel and checked it was all okay," Mr Walker said.

Traffic travelling on the east lane was diverted through Royal Tce.

Firefighters left the scene by 12.50pm.
