CODC approves 9% rate increase

A district-wide rate increase of about 9% was approved by the Central Otago District Council yesterday without any comment by councillors.

After many hours of debate at community board level during estimates time, the council's decision to set the rates was a speedy affair, without a single comment.

The council will collect $19,084,637 in rates this year, compared with $17,515, 249 last year.

Rates increases throughout the district vary depending on which ward ratepayers are in and there are also variations within the ward, depending on whether ratepayers have access to water and wastewater schemes and how close they live to major recreation and cultural facilities.

Differentials are used to assess library services rates, Vincent culture and recreation rates, Clutha management and the Earnscleugh-Manuherikia ward services rates.

The total rate take from the Vincent ward is going up by 3%, while in Cromwell the rate take across the ward is increasing by 16%.

The Maniototo and Roxburgh wards both face an 11% rise.

The total rates required from the Vincent ward are $4,329,813 and rates to be collected from Cromwell are $2,767,205, while $1,362, 397 is needed from the Maniototo ward and Roxburgh will contribute 797,382 of the total rate take.

The remaining $9.8 million comes from district-wide rates.

The first instalment of rates is due on August 20.
