Lawrence 150 years on farms

Six New Zealand farms and stations with ties to the same family for at least 150 years will be recognised along with their contributions to farming at this year's New Zealand Century Farm and Stations Awards in Lawrence.

Organisers of the May 9 event confirmed 32 awards would be made on the night and they hoped that Prime Minister John Key would accept an invitation to attend.

Kelly Aitken, who is part of the team planning the event, said the six sesquicentennial awards would be the most handed out at the awards, which were now in their fourth year.

Four of the six sesquicentennial awards would be presented to Otago families - the Clarkes, from Milton, the Finnie farm, at Saddle Hill, the McMillan property, at Oamaru, and Longlands Stations, at Ranfurly.

The two other recipients come from Blenheim and Wellington.

Mrs Aitken said planning was well advanced for the event and organisers were again expecting a large crowd of farmers from around the country.

An added attraction this year would be the chance for visitors to inspect the new Century Farm museum and centre, which features photographs of established farming families, a video presentation of the awards and other material.
