New Central bureau chief appointed

Jared Morgan has been appointed to head Allied Press’ Central Otago bureau, overseeing the Otago Daily Times and The News. He will be based in Alexandra.

Originally from Oamaru, Mr Morgan joins the ODT after nine years in Ukraine, where he covered the three-month revolution to oust the country’s president, the subsequent political upheaval, the annexation by Russia of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea and the war in Eastern Ukraine.

He covered print, television and radio.

He returned to New Zealand in December.

Before his stint overseas, Mr Morgan was based in Invercargill, where he worked at The Southland Times, primarily as police and emergency services reporter.

During his time there he was a twice reognised for feature writing at the Qantas Media Awards, winning junior feature writer of the year in 2007 and transport feature writer of the year in 2008.

He started as a reporter at the Ashburton Guardian in 2004, after studying journalism at Aoraki Polytechnic in Timaru.
