Jud Arthur, former Otago representative rugby player turned opera singer, took to the stage in the main street of Ranfurly last night as part of the town's Jazz 'n' Jocks event.

Almost 100 people braved the nose-numbing night to tap their toes to Arthur's bass-baritone melodies under the giant Maniototo rugby jersey. Cheering loudly they demanded: "Give us another" and "Encore". Arthur sang seven songs before the crowd retreated back into the warmth of the pubs to catch the New Zealand v Japan Rugby World Cup game.

He began with a Michael Buble number, followed by show tunes including I Got Plenty of Nothing, Some Enchanted Evening and Ol' Man River, which he said he used to sing in his rugby days.

Ranfurly shops opened for late-night shopping, a first for the town since the late 1970s, but there weren't many people out shopping. Amy Hope, of The Hair Studio, said late-night shopping was "definitely something we are going to push for for summer".

A selection of local jazz entertainers performed at various establishments. The Jazz 'n' Jocks - A Quintessential Central Otago Tour is part of the REAL New Zealand Festival.
