A permanent memorial to rural community stalwart and businesswoman Heather Perriam will be unveiled in the Tarras village tomorrow.

Mrs Perriam, who died after a short battle with cancer a year and a-half ago, was instrumental in the development and remodelling of the village's retail and tourist complex and an active member in many community groups, organisations and charities.

Tarras Rural Women, which Mrs Perriam helped revive in 1990, has funded the Heather Perriam memorial seat.

"She was a pivotal member of Rural Women and came up with bright ideas," committee member Jan Gibson said.

The many Rural Women projects instigated by Mrs Perriam included making tapestry kneelers for the Tarras church and planting the Otago Goldfields Heritage Rose collection at the Tarras cemetery.

The Rev Catherine Little, of Wanaka, will carry out the dedication of the memorial seat, while Mrs Perriam's grandchildren Lucy (9) and Fergus (5) Perriam will do the unveiling.

The ceremony will take place at 12.30pm tomorrow, outside the Merino Shop, which Mrs Perriam operated.
