New eco award for schools

A new award has been established to recognise the work schools and pupils do in conservation and the environment.

The Toroa Award, a joint initiative by the Otago Peninsula Trust and the Department of Conservation, will be awarded for the first time during the Otago Conservation Awards in September.

Doc community relations ranger Liz Sherwood said the award would acknowledge schools and pupils who had initiated conservation or environmental projects that had strong links with their community, and hopefully encourage more schools and pupils to do so.

Otago Peninsula Trust education adviser Sally Carson said to enter, brief descriptions of the actions, benefits and community involvement in a recent or current project, with some evidence of the pupil's work, was required.

Nominations were open until August 30, for all schools within Doc's coastal Otago area - Dunedin City, Clutha District, and Waitaki District south of Waitaki River and inland to Duntroon.
