Anzac event wish spurs free concert

An old boy of Waitaki Boys' High School wants to see its Hall of Memories, built to honour pupils who served in World War 1, used during Anzac ceremonies.

Allan Portis, with support from rector Paul Jackson and Old Boys' Association president Russell Gawn, has organised a free concert in the hall from 2.30pm on Saturday, April 25.

It will feature Oamaru thespian Richard Bowering with ''poignant but sometimes humorous'' readings from World War 1 and pianist June Cameron, along with the school's music head, Stephen Hinds, on the organ.

A choir of boys from the school will sing the national anthem and the school song.

Mr Portis said the Hall of Memories, opened in March 1927, was built in memory of about 700 pupils who served and 116 of those who died in World War 1.

''I was keen to see it used for the purpose it was built, especially when this is the centenary of World War 1,'' he said.

He envisages the concert becoming an annual Anzac event.

The concert, followed by afternoon tea, is free, but people can make a donation.
