A body, believed to be that of a missing hunter, was found in hills inland from Oamaru at the weekend.
A spokesman said police were notified at 11.43pm on Saturday a hunting party had lost contact with one of their companions.
The location given was Lancers Hut, near Scout Hill.
A search and rescue helicopter was deployed with a ground search team and dog, and a body was found. Police would not be drawn on the cause of death.
While the body is believed to be that of the missing hunter, formal identification was yet to take place.
