They were not discarded or forgotten; they were waiting to find a new home as part of a campaign by local floral artists to ''share smiles and happiness'' in the community through the medium of flowers.
About 25 bouquets were placed around the North Otago town as part of the ''Lonely Bouquet Project'', North Otago Floral Art Group president Colleen Waby said.
Each bouquet, prepared by about 15 members of the group on Monday night, had a note attached that read: ''Adopt me please! I'm all alone and looking for a new home, perhaps I can live with you.''
It was a way for members of the group to spread some cheer and give back to the community, Mrs Waby said.
