Community group volunteers in the Waitaki Community House in Oamaru have had their spirits lifted.

After 15 years, they finally have a lift, installed at a cost of $150,000 and paid for by grants raised by the Waitaki Community House Trust.

The former Waitaki County Council chambers in lower Thames St is owned by the Waitaki District Council, which rents it to the trust.

The trust makes it available to 10 community groups.

The second storey was previously only accessible by narrow, steep stairs and the trust had for 15 years been trying to get a lift installed.

Now the lift is in, access to offices for three support groups, a conference room, the kitchen and the toilets is a lot easier.
