He enjoys growing chrysanthemums but had never exhibited any before the show. Everybody had been very helpful and friendly and he had received plenty of advice, he said.
He had been concerned his blooms might be past their best by the time show started but he managed to find enough for 13 entries.
Mr Shaw has at least 50 varieties and about 150 plants, which he grows mainly in a tunnel house, with some spare cultivars growing in a garden.
He said he would probably exhibit his flowers more often now he knew what to expect.
Long-time chrysanthemum grower and show manager Allen Smith, of Waimate, said Mr Shaw had done very well for a first-time exhibitor.
The Scottish Hall was filled with colour, with flowers, vegetables, floral art and photography exhibited and a colourful display of dahlias.
