Gemmells Bridge hole to be fixed

The Gemmells Crossing Bridge will be closed for two days next month for repairs.

For 48 hours from March 3, motorists will have to take alternate routes, via Kakanui Valley Rd and Roundhill Rd, while a hole that has formed in a concrete panel on the bridge deck is repaired.

Waitaki District Council acting roading manager Mark Renalson said the hole would be filled with a bonding agent, which would also strengthen the deck around it.

The Waitaki District Council had been monitoring the hole for the past six months.

''Forty-eight hours is required to make the repair and allow the deck to cure,'' Mr Renalson said.

''We just need to be able to get it done without the worries of traffic.''

While the bridge is closed, other repairs will be carried out, including securing any loose components, general maintenance and clearing dust and debris.

''We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, however, we are confident there will be minimal disruption to motorists,'' Mr Renalson said.

Once re-opened, a temporary speed limit across the bridge will be in place for a week.
